The new iPhone 14 will be available in autumn 2022. Premiere not only for the smartphone, but also for a new technology, as the well-known Apple expert Ming-Chi Kuo has now confirmed. But what is behind the integration of “Wi-Fi 6E”?
iPhone 14 receives Wi-Fi 6E for the first time
According to Apple expert and insider Ming-Chi Kuo, it will iPhone 14 equipped for the first time with the completely new wireless standard Wi-Fi 6E be (source: MacRumors). But why is the new technology so important for Apple and the industry?
First of all, it is important to mention: Wi-Fi 6E offers the same functions and possibilities of Wi-Fi 6 (Apple is currently already using it, for example in the iPhone 13), including higher performance, lower latency and faster data rates. All of this, however expanded to include the 6 GHz band. The additional frequency spectrum in turn enables a larger transmission range than the existing 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi, which leads to a larger bandwidth and less interference.
All models of the iPhone 13 already use Wi-Fi 6, shown here im Video:
The reason: New wireless standard necessary for Apple’s data glasses
Now the highlight: Wi-Fi 6E is intended for short distances for the time being. This small detail is crucial, because not only the new iPhone 14 is provided by Apple with Wi-Fi 6E. Kuo also explicitly mentions the much speculated mixed reality headset from Apple. The combination of VR and AR glasses should also get the fast wireless standard. According to Kuo, Wi-Fi 6E will be the real key to the high-speed wireless transmissions required. In short: Without Wi-Fi 6E, there is also no mixed reality headset.
Accordingly, Apple’s competitors will jump on the bandwagon and integrate Wi-Fi 6E, for example Meta (formerly Facebook).
There are already some exciting concepts for such AR / VR headsets:
If Apple’s Mixed Reality Headset gets Wi-Fi 6E, then of course the iPhone 14 must be able to keep up. Both devices will also be able to communicate directly with each other or will probably have to. An uninterrupted and fast data connection is then imperative. Ergo: The new data glasses are the secret reason for the jump to Wi-Fi 6E in the iPhone 14. Apple will probably present the new “toy” together with the new smartphone in the autumn of next year.
