January 1, 2022, abolition of the ‘game shutdown system’

The Ministry of Gender Equality and Family (Minister Jeong Young-ae) has announced a so-called “game shutdown” that prohibits the provision of Internet games to adolescents under the age of 16 during the late-night hours (00:00 to 6:00 am) as part of the “Youth Protection Act” comes into effect from January 1, 2022. It was announced that it would be abolished. The amended law (promulgated on Feb. 2, ‘2) restricts the time limit for providing late-night internet games to youth under the age of 16, and deletes the penalty provisions for violations.
